New Introduction to Horticultural Therapy class scheduled for 2007

 

Introduction to Horticultural Therapy Class
scheduled for February 22-25, 2007 in Greensboro, North Carolina

The innovative horticultural therapy program conducted by Sally Cobb at The Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, North Carolina will play host to the Horticultural Therapy Institute's next Introduction to Horticultural Therapy class.
"We have numerous gardens designed for healing purposes, including a labyrinth, shade garden, children's garden, rose gardens and more," explained Cobb. "It's all supervised by the HT who coordinates individual and community volunteers to keep the gardens maintained and thriving. I've been told this is the only hospice in the country to employ a full-time horticultural therapist."
Students who attend the four-day Introduction class February 22-25, 2007 will learn about Cobb's program as well as hear from other's using horticultural therapy in their programs. By attending the class, students can enter the HT Certificate program offered by the Institute and in turn move them closer to credentialing in horticultural therapy.
The HT Certificate program combines face-to-face classroom skills with assignments and projects accomplished at a distance. All courses and distance assignments are practical, useful, real-world experience enabling help students to gain proficiency and confidence in the field. Serving people with diverse life experiences, the Institute offers high-quality educational opportunities with each faculty member experienced and enthusiastic practitioners and educators.
The Introduction to HT course introduces the profession and practice of horticultural therapy, which uses gardening activities in health care and human service programs. The course describes the types of programs utilizing horticultural therapy as well as the cognitive, social, emotional and physical goals for the diversity of people served. The class is accredited by AHTA for .4 points and the entire certificate program has been awarded 1.5 points towards professional registration. In addition, students can obtain academic credit for the class through Colorado State University as well as continuing education units (CEU's).
