Courses are offered in a hybrid distance-learning format where students come to a specific location in the U.S. for a four or five-day intensive class and then return home. That is, they combine the four-day face-to-face sessions with pre-class and take-home assignments that are mailed in after class. We don’t offer any courses in a strictly distance format because we have found tremendous value in the face-to-face experience.
Students begin in the fall with Fundamentals of Horticultural Therapy, followed by one class each semester, ending the following fall. There are no prerequisites for enrolling in Fundamentals of Horticultural Therapy. However, because subsequent classes build upon the content learned in previous courses, there are prerequisites for each of them. In most years we offer Fundamentals of Horticultural Therapy in three locations around the country. The remaining three courses in the certificate series are offered in Colorado (the home base of the HT Institute) and one other location around the country. Recently the Institute has been alternating classes between California and North Carolina every other year. The course curriculum at each location is the same and courses can be taken at either location.
